History of Jersey Airport

Before 1937, only biplane airliners and a few seaplanes landed on the beach at Saint Aubin's Bay to provide Jersey with air travel. Several airlines, including Jersey Airways and Imperial Airways, served the island before WWII.

It was also challenging to stop people from crossing the landing area. The tide would have to go out before any planes with technical issues could be towed up the slipways. Jersey State constructed an airport that first opened to the public in 1937. It features four grass runways, the longest 896 meters long, and has a concrete centerline.

Concrete taxiways were erected during the Luftwaffe's airport occupation in World War II. Hangars were also constructed, including the Jersey Airlines hangar, which is still standing but is no longer in service. In 1952, the grass strips were retired and replaced with a tarmac runway of 1,280 meters.

The airport's traffic management system, complete with lights blocking off the road leading from Les Quennevais to the airport whenever planes were being transported to or from the hangar used by BEA, was a notable feature in the '50s.

About Jersey, Channel Islands

Jersey, a self-governing British Crown Dependency off the coast of northwest France, is an island country. It is located 23 kilometers from the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy and is the largest of the Channel Islands. Jersey and the uninhabited islands and rocks of Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, and Les Pierres de Lecq make up the Bailiwick.

The Norman dukes that ruled over Jersey in 1066 also ruled England. Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown even after the ducal title in Normandy was ceded to France in the 13th century. However, it was never annexed by the English Crown.

Jersey is an independent parliamentary democracy with its own monetary, legal, and judicial systems and the right to self-determination, although being ruled by a constitutional monarchy. The island is unique among Crown Dependencies in its connection with the British government.

The King is represented by the Lieutenant Governor. Jersey is an international territory, not part of the United Kingdom. By right, the United Kingdom must provide for Jersey's security.

The island is home to a substantial financial services sector. The island's primary currency is the British Pound, and English is the de facto communication medium. The use of the left side of the road, the availability of British media, the adoption of the English educational model, and the prevalence of British sports like cricket are a few other examples of shared British cultural traits.

Aside from its historical Norman dialect, Jèrriais, and the fact that it is one of only two places in Normandy where the language has government status (the other being Guernsey), the island also has a strong Norman-French culture due to its use of standard French in legal matters and official use as a government language, its close cultural ties to mainland Normandy as a part of the Normandy region, and its place names with French or Norman origins.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Islands are culturally connected to the island, and they compete with it in a friendly way. The island of Jersey and its inhabitants have been called a "nation."

August has the warmest average high and low temperatures, at 68 and 58 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

The average daily high is below 51 degrees Fahrenheit from November until March, making this the chilly season. February is the coldest month, with temperatures between 40 and 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
